Saying Goodbye Gracefully

So many people are voting with their feet and changing or leaving roles for heaps of different reasons.

As a leader, it can sting a bit no matter why your team member is choosing to leave. However, you can turn the sting into insight by inviting the ‘leaver’ for a walk around the park or out for a beverage. The trick is to get curious instead of cranky!

Here are a few questions to help get you started:
·     What did you like most about your role?
·     What irked you the most about your role?
·     How can I set up the next person in your role for success?
·     What did I do well as your leader?
·     What could I have done better or differently as your leader?

This may be in addition to the People Department’s exit interview process and that’s OK!

Your role is to ask the questions, breathe, listen to understand, keep breathing and say thank you.

I reckon you’ll be surprised by what you learn about yourself, your team and the organisational culture. A few nuggets of gold that you turn into action could have a big impact on you and your team in 2022.

Be brave! You got this!
